Angels Of Light is an incredible band. To see them perform live even makes you appreciate them even more.

I saw them last year and they were AMAZING, intense and beautiful, even though Michael had a cold And he hung around after the show to autograph CD's and talk to fans.

I've read a couple of 'zine interviews with Gira - he comes off as very earnest and friendly, of course with a dark, kinda twisted worldview. He recently did a show with Adult. (of all bands!) here in Chicago - sadly I had to work, but I thought it was an insane match-up for an evening's entertainment.

lol angels of light with adult. Though i enjoy both bands it would be rather surreal to see them back to back live. Lucky mofo ;)

I just got the most recent Angels Of Light CD today, and while it's not at all disappointing, it's not grabbing me like "How I Loved You" - it's good in that it's very Swans-ish and dark, but it doesn't really tread new ground the way the previous one did...there was a warmth to "How I Loved You" that was almost perverse, considering the source.

I dunno...maybe I just need to live with this one for a while and I'll warm up to it...

A bit of trivial knowledege ... on "How I Loved You" there's a ballad ... I can't remember the title, but it's the one with the ukelele ... the backup singer is Bliss Blood, the lead singer of the legendary Pain Teens from my hometown of Houston. They're a great punk / experimental band worth checking out ...

I know what song you're talking about and I wish I had my copy of the album in front of me so I could identify the song title...it reminds me of Magnetic Fields doing a cover of Prince's "Purple Rain" for some reason, which really isn't that bad of a combination if you think about it...

New Mother's great. After that, good, but kinda lost steam. Saw Gira in the Beyond the pale show. Quite good, and quite different from Swans.

Evangeline is great...I think my favorite on that album is "Untitled Love Song". The pics on the cover are freaky, huh?

        >you can kinda see the resemblance between Gira and his father.

I'll admit that I'm a real late bloomer when it comes to the Swans. I didn't hear about them 'til the Beyond the Pale a few years ago when Michael Gira did some stuff with Angels Of Light members....it was one of the most powerful musical experiences I've ever had in my life. The power in his voice of Love Will Save You just resonated with my soul (yeah that sounds stupid and I never talk like that but it really did!). I hope the Angels of Light will make it out west sometime soon I really like that project as well.

Out of the three Angels of Light albums I have, I prefer How I Loved You... my three fave songs are Evangeline, Untitled Love Song, and Two Women... the first time I heard Two Women, tears literally started pouring from my eyes and I didn't even know why! It was so moving that I didn't even have to think about it to be moved! I cried, too, when I saw them play it live last year. It's just so beautiful...

It is of my opinion that so few musicians get better with age and that Michael Gira is one of two that I really think fall under that category, the other person being Nick Cave...

My True Body, Nations, All Souls Rising, God`s Servant, Praise Your Name, New Mother and the glorious live version of New City in The Future (from Benefit for Jarboe) are AoL favourites.
Dont know if a 4th album would interest me though....

To me, "How I Loved You" is right up there with L. Cohen's "Songs of Love and Hate," and in a tangential way, "The Velvet Underground & Nico." I seriously doubt Gira will ever create something that beautiful again, but I remain cautiously optimistic.

evangeline is utterly perfect - saw that live once at the great america music hall and my friend a. and i were astounded. i'm quite fond of All Soul's Rising {off Everything Is Good Here/ Please Come Home - the album title lives in this mind at least as a message to jarboe...} for its intensity... still getting to know The Angel's of Light Sing "Other People"...

I love The Angels Of Light........ perfect autumn music. that and Backworld were all I could listen to on my ipod for 2 months straight last fall
as the leaves were falling and the rains came... haha.... really.
now that it is spring.... I am not listening to them as much, still LOVE it though
the perfect music for that certain mood, you know the one, that blissfull melencholy, that whistful intensity, with a hint of weirdness at the edges...
and it's true for me, as well, what I heard others say about Evangeline....perfection!
I think "Everything is good here/please come home" is my favourite album....
