The Great Annihilator! That album blows me away (not that the other ones don't)!

That's a good one. Soundtracks For The Blind still blows me away every time I hear it. It's so dense to me, every time I give it a listen, it sounds new.
  • White Light From the Mouth of Infinity and
    Great Annihilator....
    • I LOVE them all, of course, but my favorites are Children of God and Love of Life. Children of God was the first Swans album I ever bought (a cassette, in college).

Children of God is a really good one...I got the two-disc deal w/ World of Skin a few months ago, so Children of God is relatively new to me (other than what's on Various Failures)...as I fill in the gaps in my Swans collection, I'm amazed at how excellent every single album is...
  • White light from the mouth of infinity, whitout a doubt. That said, I listened to Great Annhihilator this morning, and it took two fucking hours to get out of bed.

She's just a drug adiction, and a self-relflecting image of a narcotized mind.
  • Love of Life and White Light

and somebody please explain what's up with the carrots and the bunnies on fire

    favorite foundsound lines...

"i shot her right through the heart. practically tore it in two..."

    and

"well, i dont know what to say.everybody here knows that i'm fucked up. and everybody here knows that you're fucked up. but does everybody know....."
  • I have yet to hear a bad (or even a just okay Swans release). The question should be 'what's your least favorite Swans album'? In that case I'd say the live album that's mastered as one track.

If pressed, however, I'll say my favorite album is 'Children of God'.

BTW, if anyone is interested, there's also a tribe dedicated to Whitehouse.
    • can't think of a least favorite, probably the Love will tear us apart EP, but even it is great.i'm not as fond of the non-swans material.

and that one track live does suck, skinny puppy's Ain't it dead yet? is the same way. uncalled for and annoying.
      • Actually, I don't think it's a bad album at all. Very lo-fi and the mastering is an annoyance.

I guess it's an album only the diehards will get into anyway, so the mastering is like a test of how 'true' you are.

Merzbow and many black metal bands seem to use that ploy as well.
  • It's a toss up between Holy Money and COP. Either is a good way to start the morning.
    • Since I'm a new member, I'm a little late to the
discussion. But I generally lean towards the ultra
grime and power of the early material (anything
from "Body to Body" relics to the supreme industrial
filth of live albums like "Public Castration Is A Good
Idea" or "Feel Good Now"). After that, the final era
material is also amazing, whether it's the tribal
mantras of "Great Annihilator" or the eerie
existential drones of "Soundtracks For The Blind."
The middle period Swans (a.k.a. the "goth" period)
seems less unique and inspired. Sadly, I think it's
also their most popular material, despite M Gira
accurately summing it up as "various failures"
when he reissued it recently. However, there is
still a wealth of emotionally potent and
atmospherically amazing music in that era...in my
mind, everything Swans has done is worthy!

But I suppose "Swans Are Dead" is the ultimate
Swans release, since it manages to assimilate
everything the band ever released without
sacrificing the cruel dominating muscle of old
Swans, the swooning prettiness of the middle
era Swans, or the shivery ambient chill of final
      period Swans.

So there you have it. Sorry for the verbose
blathering...and the lateness of the response.

More than a year after this thread began, anyone seen SWANS when they toured for children of god? It is my favorite album for the lyrics and the memories. I was a freshman at Univ. of NC in Raleigh and that's where the merchandising was located before it moved to Atlanta. It was one of my favorite concert 2 concerts ever: at the old 9:30 club in dc with my arguable favorite band opening : blackgirls. Does anyone know how many shows the band carried blackgirls with them along the tour. Thanks.
